Gluconic acid, also known as dextrorotatory gluconic acid, is a sugar acid formed by the oxidation of the aldehyde group in the glucose molecule to a carboxyl group under the action of weak oxidizing agents or enzymes. Its 6-phosphate ester is an intermediate in the oxidative decomposition of glucose in organisms (the pentose phosphate pathway). It forms soluble salts with metal ions such as calcium and zinc, which are used as nutrients and pharmaceuticals.
