NPI-102 CAS 86428-83-3 - Topfine Chemical

NPI-102 is a general-purpose free radical photoinitiator commonly used as an improved version of BP. It offers high initiation efficiency and low odor, making it especially suitable for food packaging inks and varnishes. The product appears as an off-white to white powder with high purity and reliable batch-to-batch performance.

Introduction

NPI-102 is a substituted benzophenone, and the substitution is the point. The methyl and phenyl groups on the ring shift the absorption to 289 nm and change the odour and volatility profile relative to plain benzophenone, which is why it turns up in varnishes and packaging inks where the cured film's smell matters.

Like all benzophenones it is a Type II initiator: it abstracts hydrogen rather than fragmenting, so it needs a tertiary amine co-initiator and it does not work on its own. It is also not an LED initiator. Its absorption is too short for 395 nm arrays.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Off-white to white powder. Chemical name 3-methyl-4-phenylbenzophenone. Molecular formula C20H16O, molecular weight 272.34, purity ≥99.00% by HPLC, melting range 81.0–84.0 °C, loss on drying ≤0.50%. Absorption maximum at 289 nm.

Applications

Recommended at 3–5% by weight, with an amine synergist. Suited to varnishes and packaging inks where a lower-odour benzophenone is wanted.

Regulatory status

NPI-102 has no harmonised classification under CLP. It is not on the REACH Candidate List and is not listed in Swiss Annex 10. Note that it is a benzophenone derivative, and that the benzophenone family carries a more involved regulatory picture than the parent substance's chemistry alone would suggest; check the position for your specific market and end use. Food-contact use in particular should be confirmed against measured migration from your own construction rather than inferred.

Handling & Storage

Store sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Consult the SDS.

Packaging

20 kg cartons. COA per batch, SDS in English, samples available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.

Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?

Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.

What documents do you provide with each shipment?

Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.

What is your typical lead time?

Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.

What payment terms do you accept?

We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.

Are you a factory or a trading company?

We are an integrated supplier with three in-house manufacturing plants, supported by five warehouses across China. This gives us direct control over production quality while maintaining a broad product range.
