1173 is a general-purpose free radical photoinitiator, one of the most mature and widely used photoinitiators in UV curing materials. It offers excellent cost performance and relatively balanced properties, with strong UV absorption at 244, 278 and 322 nm. It is particularly suitable for UV-curable wood coatings and basic/simple coatings at a recommended level of approximately 3–5%.
Equivalent grades. The same substance is sold by other manufacturers as Omnirad 1173, Irgacure 1173, Darocur 1173. It is the same CAS number (7473-98-5) and the same chemistry, so a formulation written around one of those grades transfers directly.
Introduction
1173 is the workhorse. It is one of the most mature photoinitiators in UV curing, it has been specified for decades, and it is usually the cheapest way to get a film to cure. If your application is a wood coating or a straightforward clear or pigmented system on a mercury lamp, 1173 will do the job.
What you pay for that economy is odour and volatility. 1173 is a liquid, which makes it easy to dose, but it evaporates more readily than the solid alpha-hydroxy ketones. In an oven that means more smell, and on a long production run it means progressive lamp fouling. Neither shows up on the raw material invoice, and both are real maintenance costs.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Light yellow transparent liquid. Molecular formula C10H12O2, molecular weight 164.20, purity ≥98.00% by GC, approximately 4 °C melting point. Absorption maxima at 244, 278 and 322 nm.
Applications
Recommended at approximately 3–5%. Best suited to UV-curable wood coatings and basic or simple coating systems where cost performance matters more than odour or long-run lamp cleanliness. It is also widely used as a co-initiator alongside longer-wavelength photoinitiators.
Regulatory status
1173 has no harmonised classification under CLP, so any hazard labelling on its SDS is the supplier's own self-classification. It is not on the REACH Candidate List, not restricted under Annex XVII, and not listed in Swiss Annex 10. In the United States it is the only photoinitiator in this range with Food Contact Notification coverage, and that coverage is narrow: two Evonik FCNs for cured silicone acrylate, which do not make it generally usable in food-contact applications.
Handling & Storage
Store in a tightly closed container away from heat and light. One year shelf life from production. Consult the SDS before handling.
Packaging
Standard packaging as agreed at order; custom packaging available. COA per batch, SDS in English.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.
Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?
Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.
What documents do you provide with each shipment?
Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.
What is your typical lead time?
Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.
What payment terms do you accept?
We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.
Are you a factory or a trading company?
We are an integrated supplier with three in-house manufacturing plants, supported by five warehouses across China. This gives us direct control over production quality while maintaining a broad product range.
