BP CAS 119-61-9 - Topfine Chemical

BP is a general free radical photoinitiator with excellent reactivity and cost effectivity. BP can also be used as organic synthesis raw materials and intermediates.

Equivalent grades. The same substance is sold by other manufacturers as Omnirad BP, Genocure BP. It is the same CAS number (119-61-9) and the same chemistry, so a formulation written around one of those grades transfers directly.

Introduction

Benzophenone is one of the oldest and cheapest photoinitiators in use, and it is also one of the most tightly regulated substances in this catalogue. Both facts belong on the same data sheet, and we would rather put them there than have a customer discover the second one during an audit.

It is a Type II photoinitiator. On its own it absorbs light and does very little; it needs a hydrogen donor, usually a tertiary amine, to generate radicals. Its absorption sits at 210 and 255 nm, which is short by modern standards and means it is not a sensible choice for LED curing. Beyond UV it is also used as a chemical intermediate and as a raw material for organic synthesis, and a substantial share of the volume we ship goes to those uses rather than to coatings.

Physical & Chemical Properties

White crystalline solid. Molecular formula C13H10O, molecular weight 182.22, purity ≥99.00% by GC, melting range 46.0–50.0 °C, loss on drying ≤0.5%. Absorption maxima at 210 nm and 255 nm.

Applications

Recommended at 3–5% where it is used as a photoinitiator, always in combination with an amine synergist. Also supplied as an intermediate for organic synthesis.

Regulatory status

Benzophenone carries a harmonised Carc. 1B classification applying from 23 November 2023. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1132 inserted it into Annex XVII by way of Appendix 2 to Entry 28, which restricts supply to the general public from 1 December 2023. Industrial use is not general public supply, but the classification has consequences well beyond that entry.

In food contact the picture is unusual. Benzophenone is the only photoinitiator in this range that appears on the EU 10/2011 Annex I positive list, as FCM substance No. 286 (reference 38240), with a specific migration limit of 0.6 mg/kg and no group restriction. It is listed in Swiss Annex 10 at 0.6 mg/kg as part of a sum with the methylbenzophenones. It is not listed in category V of German Anlage 14. In the United States it is not a listed indirect food additive.

If you are specifying benzophenone into a food-contact application, read the classification and the positive list together rather than either one alone, and confirm the position for your specific market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.

Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?

Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.

What documents do you provide with each shipment?

Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.

What is your typical lead time?

Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.

What payment terms do you accept?

We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.

Are you a factory or a trading company?

We are an integrated supplier with three in-house manufacturing plants, supported by five warehouses across China. This gives us direct control over production quality while maintaining a broad product range.
