Grade ZRS A-1 | Metal content 12±0.2%. Used as a lead-free drier and auxiliary drier in paints, varnishes, and printing inks; improves hardness and gloss.
Introduction
Zirconium octoate is the auxiliary drier that does the work cobalt cannot reach. Cobalt drives surface drying; zirconium promotes through-dry and crosslinking deeper in the film, and the two together give a more uniform cure than either achieves at higher loading alone. Increasing zirconium and decreasing cobalt is one of the standard routes to a lower-cobalt formulation.
This grade carries 12.0 ± 0.2% zirconium, pale yellow to amber, and is compatible with alkyd, epoxy ester and acrylic systems.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Pale yellow to amber clear liquid. Metal content 12.0 ± 0.2% Zr. Molecular formula Zr(C8H15O2)4. Density 0.90–0.95 g/cm³ at 20 °C, viscosity 50–150 mPa·s at 25 °C, flash point ≥35 °C closed cup, acid value ≤10 mg KOH/g, moisture ≤0.5%.
Applications
Balanced top-drying and through-drying activity. Suited to high-solids and conventional coatings where film hardness and leveling matter. Low odour and low colour contribution.
Regulatory status
Zirconium is sometimes marketed as carrying less regulatory pressure than cobalt. There is something to that, and it is worth stating precisely rather than loosely. Zirconium octoate has no harmonised CLP classification, and neither does cobalt octoate. No cobalt substance is on the REACH Authorisation List; the 2018 ECHA proposal on inorganic cobalt salts was terminated in April 2022. So on the metal side there is no current legal differentiation between them.
Where the two are identical is the acid. Both are octoates, both are built on 2-ethylhexanoic acid, and that is what carries the harmonised Repr. 1B classification under CLP entry 607-230-00-6, restricted by Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1132 in Annex XVII Appendix 6 from 1 December 2023. Substituting zirconium for cobalt reduces the cobalt content of your formulation. It does not remove the 2-EHA driver, and the finished coating keeps its H360D labelling.
If leaving that restriction behind is the actual objective, the naphthenate route is the one to examine. If the objective is simply to lower cobalt, this grade does that job well.
21 CFR 175.300(b)(3)(xxii) lists zirconium octoate among permitted US drier combinations.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.
Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?
Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.
What documents do you provide with each shipment?
Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.
What is your typical lead time?
Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.
What payment terms do you accept?
We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.
