Introduction
Manganese octoate is what many formulators reach for when they want to reduce cobalt without giving up drying performance. It is an auxiliary rather than a primary drier: used alongside cobalt or zirconium it improves through-dry and film hardness, and it lets you lower the cobalt loading while keeping the cure.
This grade is a 7 ± 0.2% manganese solution in 200# solvent oil, purple in colour and virtually odourless, which suits white and light-tinted coatings where a darker drier would show through.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Purple liquid. Metal content 7 ± 0.2% as Mn. Molecular formula C16H30MnO4. Density 0.90–0.95 g/cm³ at 20 °C, viscosity 30–60 mPa·s at 25 °C, flash point ≥45 °C closed cup, acid value ≤10 mg KOH/g, moisture ≤0.5%.
Applications
Auxiliary drier enhancing through-drying when combined with cobalt or zirconium. Excellent compatibility with alkyd, epoxy ester and oil-based resin systems. Improves hardness without affecting surface appearance.
Regulatory status
The market conversation about cobalt substitution is usually framed as a cobalt problem. It is not, and the distinction matters when you are choosing a replacement. There is no EU cobalt ban: ECHA's 2018 proposal concerned five inorganic cobalt salts and was terminated by the Commission in April 2022.
What actually constrains this product is the same thing that constrains cobalt octoate, and it is not the metal. 2-ethylhexanoic acid and its salts carry a harmonised Repr. 1B classification under CLP entry 607-230-00-6 and were brought into Annex XVII Appendix 6 by Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1132, applying from 1 December 2023. That restriction reaches the entire octoate family, so switching from cobalt octoate to manganese octoate does not move you out of it. The finished coating still carries H360D labelling.
That is the honest version, and it is why our naphthenate grades matter more than they might appear to: naphthenic acid is a different acid and sits outside that listing. If the objective is genuinely to leave the 2-EHA restriction behind rather than to reduce cobalt, the naphthenates are where to look.
On the US side, 21 CFR 175.300(b)(3)(xxii) expressly lists manganese octoate among permitted drier combinations.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.
Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?
Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.
What documents do you provide with each shipment?
Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.
What is your typical lead time?
Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.
What payment terms do you accept?
We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.
