Cobalt Naphthenate (PID B-1) CAS 61789-51-3 - Topfine Chemical

Grade PID B-1 | Metal content 7±0.2%. Traditional surface drier for air-drying coatings, alkyd resins, varnishes, and printing inks.

Introduction

PID B-1 is our 7% cobalt naphthenate, and like the 8% grade it sits outside the 2-EHA restriction that catches every octoate in this range. The lower metal content gives finer dosing control and a lower viscosity than the 8% product, which suits automated addition and formulations written around a 7% raw material.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Purple to dark violet viscous liquid. Cobalt content 7 ± 0.2%. Molecular formula Co(C11H10O2)2. Density 0.92–0.98 g/cm³ at 20 °C, viscosity 50–150 mPa·s at 25 °C, flash point ≥40 °C closed cup, acid value ≤10 mg KOH/g, moisture ≤0.5%, colour Gardner ≤10.

Applications

Fast surface drying in alkyd, epoxy ester and oil-based systems, dosed proportionally to deliver the same cobalt as the 8% grade. Compatible with other driers and paint additives.

Regulatory status

The same position as the 8% grade, since it is the same substance. There is no EU cobalt ban: the 2018 ECHA proposal covered five inorganic cobalt salts and was terminated by the Commission in April 2022, and no cobalt substance is on the Authorisation List.

The distinction that matters is the acid. Cobalt octoate is caught by the 2-ethylhexanoic acid restriction — harmonised Repr. 1B under CLP entry 607-230-00-6, Annex XVII Appendix 6 via Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1132 from 1 December 2023 — which forces H360D labelling onto the finished paint. Naphthenic acid is a different acid and is not caught. This grade therefore avoids that particular driver while still delivering cobalt's surface-drying performance.

Cobalt naphthenate has no harmonised CLP classification. Proposed CMRD 6 exposure limits remain a proposal rather than adopted law. 21 CFR 175.300(b)(3)(xxii) expressly lists cobalt naphthenate among permitted US drier combinations. Transport class UN 1268, Class 3, PG III, from the mineral spirits carrier.

Handling & Storage

Flammable liquid. Store cool, dry and well ventilated. Consult the SDS.

Packaging

25 kg and 200 kg drums. Shelf life 12 months sealed. COA and SDS supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.

Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?

Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.

What documents do you provide with each shipment?

Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.

What is your typical lead time?

Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.

What payment terms do you accept?

We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.

Are you a factory or a trading company?

We are an integrated supplier with three in-house manufacturing plants, supported by five warehouses across China. This gives us direct control over production quality while maintaining a broad product range.
