Lead Naphthenate CAS 61790-14-5 - Topfine Chemical

Grade PB-1 | Metal content 22±0.2%. Used as a through-drier in varnishes, paints, and alkyd coatings to promote drying throughout the film.

Introduction

Lead naphthenate is a traditional through-drier, valued because it promotes drying throughout the film rather than only at the surface, and because it improves film hardness and water resistance after cure. It is also the most heavily restricted product in our catalogue, and we would rather say so plainly than let a customer discover it during an audit.

This grade carries 22 ± 0.2% lead in 200# solvent oil, supplied as a yellowish-brown viscous liquid. It remains available for the markets and legacy formulations where it is still lawful, and it is not a product we will encourage you into.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Yellowish-brown viscous liquid. Lead content 22 ± 0.2% Pb. Density 1.05–1.10 g/cm³ at 20 °C, viscosity 100–200 mPa·s at 25 °C (Brookfield), flash point ≥40 °C closed cup, acid value ≤10 mg KOH/g, moisture ≤0.1%.

Applications

Through-drier in varnishes, paints and alkyd coatings, promoting drying through the full film thickness. Enhances hardness and water resistance. Generally used in combination with a surface drier such as cobalt.

Regulatory status: read this before quoting

Lead is restricted in more places and by more instruments than anything else in this range, and a good deal of what circulates about it is wrong in one direction or the other.

In the EU, the lead-in-paint restrictions sit in Annex XVII Entries 16 and 17, not Entry 63. Entry 63 concerns lead in jewellery, and we have seen it cited for paint more than once. Lead driers are additionally caught by Entry 30 and its Appendix 5, which restricts supply to the general public. The widely repeated figure of a 0.5% lead limit in paint is not an EU limit at all; the comparable US figure is 0.009% under CPSIA, in force since 2009.

Separately, Denmark bans lead driers nationally, so a Danish customer cannot take this product regardless of the wider EU position.

The 2-ethylhexanoic acid restriction does not apply here, because naphthenic acid is a different acid. That does not help, because the lead restriction is stricter and arrives first.

Our position: if you are still specifying lead naphthenate, tell us the market and end use and we will confirm what we can supply and what documentation we can provide. In most cases there is a lead-free route that performs adequately, and we will point you at it rather than sell you this one.

Handling & Storage

Store cool, dry and well ventilated away from ignition sources. Container tightly closed, protected from direct sunlight. Lead compounds require particular care in handling; consult the SDS before use.

Packaging

25 kg and 200 kg drums. Shelf life 12 months sealed. COA and SDS supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.

Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?

Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.

What documents do you provide with each shipment?

Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.

What is your typical lead time?

Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.

What payment terms do you accept?

We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.

Are you a factory or a trading company?

We are an integrated supplier with three in-house manufacturing plants, supported by five warehouses across China. This gives us direct control over production quality while maintaining a broad product range.
