Why Photoinitiators Fail Silently

A photoinitiator batch does not lose potency overnight; it degrades slowly, and by the time your cure-through fails, the batch is generally beyond recovery. The main degradation drivers are UV exposure, heat, humidity and oxygen contact with solid products. Liquid grades such as 1173 and TPO-L are more forgiving; solids like 184 and TPO are affected by the way they crystallize and re-agglomerate.

Storage Conditions That Actually Matter

  • Temperature: 10–25 °C is the safe band. Prolonged heat accelerates photolysis even in the dark; freezing is not the problem — condensation is. If a solid photoinitiator crystallizes or cakes, do not open the drum while cold and humid.
  • Light: keep containers closed and opaque. UV-curing warehouses with skylights or open loading bays are the classic failure mode — a few hours of direct sunlight on a 200 kg drum measurably reduces activity.
  • Humidity: condensation on the inner wall of a partially used drum, or on a 20 kg carton stored on the floor, can initiate local hydrolysis of initiators such as 907. Keep drums on pallets, never on the floor.
  • Ventilation: store away from heat sources, open flames and oxidizers.

Shelf Life and Retesting

Typical shelf life is 12 months from production; our COAs state the production date and batch number. If stock exceeds 12 months, verify purity (HPLC/GC or melting range for solids) and a simple cure test before use. The COA values to compare quickly: purity ≥98%, loss on drying ≤0.5% for solids, and the relevant absorption peaks for the grade.

Handling and Dosing

TPO melts at 85–95 °C; dissolve it at 60 °C max in the reactive diluent with stirring and avoid exceeding 50 °C for extended periods. For liquid grades, mix thoroughly before use and dose 3–5% (1173 in coatings) or 1–3% / 5–10% (TPO in coatings / inks).
