Introduction
Industrial grade polyisobutylene is a medium molecular weight PIB, and its defining property is that it stays permanently tacky. That is what makes it the standard raw material for insulating glass sealants and hot-melt butyl tapes: it holds the seal flexible and adherent across decades of thermal cycling.
The second property that matters is low permeability. PIB resists gas and vapour transmission better than most polymers at comparable flexibility, which is why it appears in insulating glass spacers and in sealants where moisture ingress is the failure mode.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Colourless to light viscous liquid to semi-solid. CAS 9003-27-4, molecular formula (C4H8)n. Soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons; insoluble in water. Stable against heat, light, oxygen, acids and alkalis.
Applications
Insulating glass sealants and spacers, automotive and photovoltaic sealants, hot-melt butyl tapes, adhesives, cable filling compounds, dampers, and rubber, wax and asphalt modification. Excellent tack and adhesion over a wide temperature range; good compatibility with butyl rubber, resins, plasticisers and waxes.
Regulatory status
The polymer is exempt from REACH registration; the isobutylene monomer is not. For industrial applications that is usually the whole of the EU question, and it is a point worth passing to your importer rather than leaving them to work it out.
Note that the US food-contact rule at 21 CFR 177.1420, which some suppliers cite generically for PIB, is molecular weight gated at 750,000 Flory for the homopolymer. It applies to the food grade discussion, not to industrial sealant grades, and it should not be quoted for this product.
For sealant and tape applications the relevant standards are the performance specifications of the end product rather than a substance-level food-contact rule, and we supply COA and full export documentation for those.
Handling & Storage
Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Stable under normal storage conditions. Consult the SDS.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ depends on the product and specification. For most chemicals we can supply from 1 kg sample orders up to full container loads (FCL). Contact us with the product name and CAS number for a specific MOQ quotation.
Can you provide samples before I place a bulk order?
Yes. Samples are available for most products — typically 100g to 1kg. Sample fees may apply for expensive products and are usually deducted from your first bulk order. We recommend independent testing of samples before committing to bulk.
What documents do you provide with each shipment?
Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Certificates of origin, REACH/SVHC declarations and third-party inspection reports are available on request.
What is your typical lead time?
Production usually takes 10–20 days depending on the product and quantity. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–30 days; air freight 5–10 days for samples and small orders. Our five warehouses in China allow fast dispatch of stocked items.
What payment terms do you accept?
We commonly accept 30% deposit + 70% against copy of bill of lading, T/T bank transfer, and Letters of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Payment terms are confirmed in writing before production starts.
